With more and more movies being released with English subtitles every year, learning English is not as hard as it used to be. Here’s how you can make the most of your free time and learn English with TV series.
You will not be alone if you choose to learn English with TV series. You can have English lessons at home and everywhere you go. You can use Skype to speak with your teachers and friends.
Some people prefer learning English through movie series, however, there are some scenes in the TV Series that you have view and forget once they appear. The trick is to learn what it actually tells you and make sense of the overall story (remember: how many times do we learn something by watching a film? I believe movies should teach us good things not just all wrong ones).
In addition to mastering different vocabulary words, you must be able to change yourself to talk like a native English speaker. See also, how to learn English.
How can I learn English with an online TV show?
Look for a TV show that is available on Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video. The list of shows are so huge; you will have time to choose the best ones. If there’s too many choices, ask around at your friends or use Google Analytics to see which series everyone has watched lately.
If it still sounds complicated or intimidating, be aware that Internet providers who allow online streaming can offer up-to-date viewing schedules in addition to any on-demand access that these services their customers have come across. Moreover, if you’re solely focused in choosing your favorites from the best long lasting TV series – those American ones are not a bad choice at all; they grab attention of many viewers because they are based on real events which makes them completely authentic and realistic tales. So, in conclusion, remember to focus only on good English television shows since it’s extremely important.
Some simple Instructions you can follow
- Get set with a pen, notebook (or a word editor) and a dictionary.
- Choose the right series & episode schedule that suits you best.
- Watch the show or choose a release date around your TV viewing time zone (7-8pm). Start them at 3rd, 4th episodes and go exactly when they are over which is always close to the end of it. Probably start from Episode 7 as well but again check what other people just fall down with these weekly episodes if you want to learn English fast by seeing things being spoken.
- Now watch the scene with the subtitles in your language .
- Watch another scene and have a pen to copy down the words needed or highlight them. If you see any trouble with being able to understand it after that try reading the script on Youtube or look up images “what’s this word used for”. Pay attention if there are some terms which do sound familiar – maybe they just dropped one letter such as cream instead of cry. Now switch back English Channel at 6pm while double checking all those other guide.
- Now watch the scene with subtitles in English without pausing the video. Try to add more words and expressions to your list. Up to this point, don’t use your dictionary.
- Switch back to your list, find the target word(s) and write them down. Remember this time NOT to use those English “what’s it mean” questions – such as Google Translator will help you with that just fine.
- Than watch a scene in native voice & subtitles with maximum attention! If there are any words which still seem unknown switch over back again knowing well if they already have an answer in your country’s language .
- Repeat as many times needed, after 4-5 times of doing this switching back & forth strategy your TV watching ability WILL improve. Such a thing doesn’t happen overnight but the results will appear in other ways for you to see within approx. 1 month or less depending on how active you are using it (the standard does not recommend that you start with four times per week). Just remember; apart from basic English vocabulary and expressions there really is no need to learn English from the start at this stage .
- Now after your TV watching skills are improved you can check if there’s anything missing. If so it should be relatively easy to add/find as long as both languages used in that specific scene.
You will see that in the long run the link between your language and the movie subtitles will start to disappear. Going back & forth between languages with this technique will reinforce those new skills in an exponential manner. After some months of keeping up such a habit you can pretty much forget about other large foreign releases because almost every episode (and available show) is already subtitled/translated into your own mother tongue anyway!
You may notice that even though English as most best known second language. In practical terms, it’s probably better to watch shows in your mother tongue if you intend to get fluent within a relatively short time (but note: the content is not different when watching outside of English!).
In conclusion, there are several techniques you can use to improve your English listening and speaking skills. It is not necessary to study English as a foreign language in order to be able to listen and speaking English. There are many people who have learned the English language without ever having studied it, because they have chosen to learn by doing instead of studying it.
