My cousin who has a weird yet fantastic way with languages, tells me that most people ‘speak English only’ because of the fact that their friends are speaking their vernacular language. Dictionaries are extremely useful for speaking or simple reading and if you only have one, use it! I find myself referring to mine in many different ways all the time such as: using ‘the word’ instead of saying the exact word (I often accidently say “Hello, my friends!” instead of “Hey guys?”)

The speed at which your mind flicks from one language to another is truly incomprehensible. Many people think that trying to learn 2 or 3 languages would speed up the process. I have found out that being able make yourself understood with each language made it a much faster and more effective method of learning any other language!

8. Speak, speak, speak.

Speaking at least two languages every day is essential for making sure that you are learning as much of it in the practical environment rather than being forced to memorise a timetable. 9. Label objects in your house with post-its.

If you’re scared of dying and never being able to say “remember to label the loo” after your death, then this is for you. Label all the objects by placing a note on them with post-its or tape (my favourite), so that they associate memories like upekebaba (“welcome”) in tupi language will stay forever!
